Omega-7s are a family of monounsaturated fatty acids.
Like omega-3 and omega-6, they are lipids, but they are less well known and non-essential (the body can produce them). Supplementation is recommended for very dry skin or dehydrated mucous membranes. It is easy to imagine their benefits in products intended for women going through the menopause… but not only that.
What does ‘omega-7’ mean?
The number 7 indicates the position of the double bond on the fatty acid chain (starting from the omega end). They have a single double bond, which classifies them as monounsaturated fatty acids.
The main omega-7 is palmitoleic acid, which is found in sea buckthorn (berries and oil), macadamia nuts and certain fish oils.
What are the potential effects of Omega-7?
Research suggests that they may:
• Support insulin sensitivity
• Aid fat metabolism
• Have an anti-inflammatory effect
• Contribute to cardiovascular health
• Support skin and mucous membrane health

Practical consequences & metabolic role
1️⃣ Role in insulin sensitivity
Palmitoleic acid acts as a lipokine (lipid messenger molecule):
• It improves insulin sensitivity and promotes glucose utilisation by muscles.
• It reduces glucose production in the liver.
This suggests a potential role in the prevention of metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.
2️⃣ Regulation of lipid metabolism
Omega-7s contribute to:
• Reducing excessive hepatic lipogenesis
• Lowering circulating triglycerides
• Improving the lipid profile (in certain contexts)
They appear to act as regulators of fat storage.
3️⃣ Moderate anti-inflammatory effect
Some studies show:
• A reduction in inflammatory markers
• A potential vascular protective effect
However, the evidence remains less robust than for omega-3.
4️⃣ Structural and skin role
Omega-7s are:
• Components of cell membranes
• Important for mucous membrane and skin health
• Used for dry skin or eyes

CONCLUSION :
The main representative of the omega-7 family is palmitoleic acid. It is found in sea buckthorn oil, certain animal fats and in small quantities in the body (produced by the liver).
Although less studied and less essential than omega-3s, omega-7s, which are non-essential monounsaturated fatty acids, play a potential role in insulin sensitivity, lipid metabolism and the health of the skin and mucous membranes.
